Can You Use These Providers From India? September 2026

Quick answer

India is on neither Mercury's prohibited list nor Relay's, so both fintech banking routes are open on published policy. Wise is the outlier: India is not on its list of territories where you may hold money. Everything gated on the entity rather than on you is open.

This is one of the stronger positions in the index.

The row

Checked September 1, 2026 against each provider's own published policy.

Provider India-resident owner Gate applied
Mercury Not excluded Owner residence
Relay Not excluded Citizenship or residency, any owner
Wise No (cannot hold a balance) Owner residence, inclusion list
Payoneer ? (but see Etsy below) No published country policy
Stripe Entity gate, not residence Entity country
PayPal ! Terms conflict See below
Shopify Payments Entity gate, not residence Entity country
Amazon ? No accessible policy
Apple Developer Entity gate, not residence Entity country
Google Play Entity gate, not residence Entity country
Etsy Yes, via Payoneer Bank account country
Upwork Yes Citizenship, sanctions-based

"Not excluded" is deliberate wording. It means this gate does not close on you. It is not a prediction that an account will be opened, which depends on the rest of each institution's diligence.

Sanctions-mandated exclusions: none

India appears on no sanctions list among the providers we track, and on no institutional prohibition list at Mercury or Relay either.

Institutional policy exclusions: one, and it is narrower than it looks

Wise. India is not among the 79 territories where Wise says you may hold money. It appears only in the restrictions note:

"India - you can hold money in your account when travelling overseas."

Wise, Where do I need to live to hold money with Wise?.

That is a different condition from residency eligibility and we have not tested how it operates.

Note the scope carefully. That page governs holding money. Sending and receiving are covered by separate pages we have not retrieved, so a No here means "cannot hold a Wise balance," not "cannot use Wise."

What works, in order of what to try first

1. Mercury or Relay. Both are open on published policy, which puts India in a better position than Nigeria, Pakistan or Ukraine. Start here, because banking is the step everything else waits on.

2. Stripe, once the bank account exists. The residency sentence is scoped to unregistered businesses and does not reach your LLC.

3. Shopify Payments, if you sell through Shopify. Needs a full US checking account that is ACH-eligible.

4. Etsy, through Payoneer. India is one of sixteen countries Etsy stars:

"Sellers in countries with * next to their names can accept Etsy Payments with a Payoneer Payment Account."

Etsy, Countries Eligible for Etsy Payments.

That is also the only public evidence we have of Payoneer serving India.

5. Apple Developer and Google Play. Neither tests residence. Select the organization account on Google Play so that a photo ID issued in any country is accepted; the individual path requires United States government-issued identification.

The unknown cells

Payoneer. No published country list. Etsy's starring of India is third-party evidence of coverage for that specific integration, not a Payoneer statement, so the cell stays a question mark.

Amazon. Login-gated policy pages. The circulating 188-country figure dates from May 2021.

Apple in India. A claim circulates that enrollment in India is only available through the Apple Developer app. No India-specific content appeared on Apple's enrollment page when we read it, so we could not verify it and are not repeating it.

Home-country obligations are a separate question

This page is about what US providers will accept. It says nothing about India's own rules on remittances, foreign entity ownership or reporting, which are real and are not something this page addresses.

Those belong with an Indian practitioner. Note that the US and India do have an income tax treaty, unlike Nigeria and Brazil, so the analysis differs from those corridors.
