Etsy for a Foreign-Owned US LLC: Bank Country Rules

Quick answer

Etsy gates on where your payout banking sits, not on where you live or where the LLC is formed. Etsy Payments is available in 62 listed locations, one of which is closed to new shops, so 61 are actually open to you today.

The count, and why two numbers circulate

"Etsy Payments is currently available for shops in the following countries:"

Etsy, Countries Eligible for Etsy Payments.

Our hand count on that date: 62 entries. The figure usually quoted elsewhere is 61.

Both are defensible, and the difference is China:

"At this time, new shops cannot open in China. Only sellers who already have an open shop can use Etsy Payments."

Same source.

China is on the list and closed to new sellers. Count the list and you get 62. Count what a new seller can actually choose and you get 61. We publish both and the reason, rather than picking one and looking precise.

One of the 62 is "United States territories" rather than a country, which is a second reason a raw count and a country count differ.

The sixteen that route through Payoneer

This is the detail that matters most for a non-US founder and it is easy to miss. Etsy marks some countries with an asterisk:

"Sellers in countries with * next to their names can accept Etsy Payments with a Payoneer Payment Account."

Same source.

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Georgia, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Peru, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates.

For a seller in India, Pakistan, Egypt, Ukraine or Brazil, that changes the question entirely. You are not asking whether a US bank will take you. You are asking whether Payoneer will, and Payoneer publishes no country eligibility list at all.

Where the LLC helps and where it does not

Etsy's gate is the payout bank country, so the useful question is which bank account you can actually open.

If you can open a US business bank account for the LLC, you can run a US Etsy shop. That is the clean path, and it is the one the whole operating sequence is built around.

If you cannot, because you live somewhere Mercury and Relay both refuse, the LLC does not rescue this. You would be looking at a shop in your own country's Etsy location, which is a different shop with a different currency and, once enrolled, a bank country you cannot simply change later.

Selling is not banking, and Etsy proves it

Etsy lists Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Pakistan, Ukraine and Latvia as eligible locations.

Mercury's institutional list blocks founders living in all six.

So there are founders who can open an Etsy shop and cannot open a Mercury account, and the two facts have nothing to do with each other because the providers are testing different things. Etsy asks where the money lands. Mercury asks where you sleep. Collapsing those into one verdict about a country is how most coverage of this gets it wrong.

What we could not verify

Etsy publishes no last-updated date on the eligibility page, so our September 1, 2026 retrieval date is the only date attached to the list and the count.

The rule that your selected bank country becomes your shop's country is not stated on this page. It appears in Etsy's shop-opening and location-settings help content, which we have not retrieved first-hand. We describe the mechanic here because it follows from the payout structure, and we have not quoted Etsy on it. It should be sourced properly before the next review.

Etsy publishes no owner-residency rule that we could find. The absence of one is an inference from absence, not an Etsy statement, and we are not going to write it as though Etsy had confirmed it.

The bank-country rule is a lock, not a matching requirement

Etsy is widely described as requiring your bank account to be in the same country as your shop. We went looking for that sentence on Etsy's site and it is not there. What is there is something narrower and, for a non-resident LLC owner, more consequential:

Once you've added and verified a bank account on Etsy, it's not possible to update your bank account to another one in a different country, unless you're a seller in the eurozone.

If you move to another country and can't keep or use a bank account in your original bank account country, you'll need to open a new Etsy shop.

That is a one-way lock, applied at setup. You choose a bank country once, and outside the eurozone you do not choose again. The failure mode is not being refused at signup; it is being unable to move later, with a new shop as the only remedy and your review history left behind on the old one.

The currency follows from it:

Sellers, please be advised that the currency in which your Etsy Payments funds are deposited is set in accordance with the currency of the country in which you hold your bank account.

The name must match too:

The name on your bank account must match the name or business entity you entered when you opened your shop and that is stored on your Legal and tax information page in Shop Manager.

Practical reading for a US LLC. Attach the US business account at setup, in the LLC's name, and treat that choice as permanent. Attaching a personal account in your home country because the US account is not open yet is the version of this that costs someone a shop.

Etsy publishes two country lists and they do not agree

The help center lists 62 locations eligible for Etsy Payments. The Etsy Payments Policy, which is the contractual document, names 61: 45 directly and 16 through Payoneer. The difference is "United States territories," which the help center counts and the legal policy does not name.

Neither is wrong. They are different documents doing different jobs, and anyone citing "the number of Etsy countries" without saying which one they read is reporting a coincidence.

China is listed on both and open to nobody new:

Sellers in China - At this time, new shops cannot open in China. Only sellers who already have an open shop can use Etsy Payments.

Questions people actually ask

Can a non-US resident open an Etsy shop with a US LLC? Etsy's published gate is the payout bank country rather than your residence, so the practical question is whether you can open a US business bank account for the LLC. Etsy publishes no owner-residency rule we could find.

What if I can't open a US bank account? Then a US shop is not available to you through that route, and you would be looking at a shop in an Etsy location where you can bank. Note that changing bank country later is not a simple setting change.

Which countries use Payoneer instead of a local bank? Sixteen: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Georgia, India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Peru, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Ukraine and the UAE.

Is it 61 or 62 countries? The list has 62 entries. China is listed but closed to new shops, so 61 are open to a new seller. One entry is "United States territories" rather than a country. We counted.

I live in the Philippines. Etsy says yes and Mercury says no. Which is it? Both, and they are answering different questions. Etsy is asking where your payout bank is. Mercury is asking where you live. You may well be able to sell on Etsy and unable to bank with Mercury.
